Application Information:
Using the open diamond wheel / bench grinder system to point your tungsten avoids the build up of heat at the grinding surface. Overheating causes the oxides (thorium, lanthanum, zirconium, etc.) to migrate away from the point, compromising arc starting and arc stability. This type of wheel is aggressive enough to efficiently remove material without heat build-up, never needs dressing and is long lasting. It is important to position the electrode so that the grinding marks run with the length of the electrode to ensure that the electrons will flow to the tip. Electrode can be held by hand, with a pin-vise or, as shown here, with an efficient low speed rotary handpiece.
